It is collected to Ebi Aserri, a waste treatment facility, which employs a very unique way of waste treatment with EM application.

EM is used for eliminating bad odor and processing the leachate from the waste. By transferring the EM-processed water back to the landfill, they aim for a cyclic EM treatment.
The landfill is expanded when necessary, and there still is land to last 20 more years. When the landfill area is expanded, the bottom part is covered with plastic sheets first, and pipes are installed for draining leachate and discharging methane gas. Generated gas is released though the pipes and chimneys, and is burnt when necessary.Leachate is drained through the same pipes time to time, and transferred to the water treatment facility.

They use screw type aeration method and activated sludge method to process the leachate. The treated water is brought back to the disposal site. By circulating EM treated water within the whole facility, the total volume of microorganisms will keep increasing.

At the landfill, Activated EM・1 is sprayed every day. The problem of bad odor and flies was solved. Especially, there are very few flies in the facility, which is drastically less than the other waste treatment sites.

Curacao is a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands located in the Caribbean Sea. 

Curacao Zoo is known for being an eco-friendly zoo where visitors can learn and experience about animals and nature.
It was originally a botanical garden that later changed to a zoo with exotic and tropical animals.
This zoo is administrated by the government of Curacao island and aims to save endagered species.

As an eco-friendly zoo, they focused on EM Technology and today EM is applied overall the zoo and gardens

EM APPLICATION

The Curacao Zoo educates their staff about the use of EM Technology and how to activate EM・1 in the zoo. EM・1 is activated every week for disinfecting the zoo all.
The staff feel safe and happy using a natural product like EM instead of chemicals that were used by decades because people did not know about the toxicity.

They also add some EM in drinking water and feed to control animals health condition.

As for daily general maintenance of their garden and farming area, they also use Activated EM・1 and also EM compost made from their own kitchen garbage.

Cost Reduction
Curacao Zoo had a lot of financial issues for long time because is supported by a small amount from the government that barely helps to maintain the zoo open.
One of the major problems was cleaning items that includes disinfectants and antibacterial agents that meant a monthly cost of about USD2250.
EM not only is good for the environment and animals but also good for their budget.

Further, Curacao Zoo produces about 700kg of waste every week that they used to send to a landfill. This was a high cost for the zoo but today, the staff pile up kitchen garbage and ferment it with EM to make compost. Therefore, the zoo is happy to save money and make possible a self-sustainable system.

Better Crops
After applying EM in their daily general maintenance of their garden and farming area, they got healthy crops and delicious.
They expressed that “good crops means good diet and good diet means healthy animals”.

Healthier Animals
By adding EM in animals diet, they are full of life, have beautiful coats and are more active.

Doing the Best for a Better Island 
Curacao zoo is now fully dedicated to educate their community of about 150,000 residents plus tourists and aims to make a better island applying EM in every step of their daily life.

Tanah Sutera Development Company, with EM Research Organization as technical adviser, has developed an area of 487ha at the western corridor of Johor Bahru City.
The area is mainly divided into two regions, namely Taman Sutera and Taman Sutera Utama, and the city is constructed with its housing, school, hospital and commercial facilities.

To make the city eco-sensitive, Tanah Sutera Development put up a “5R” principle, with a concept of Green Vision, i.e., “To create a zero waste and green living environment starting with Tanah Sutera residents and expanding to our community and to the society at large”. The 5R stands for five words that start with the letter “R”, namely, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Rethink and Responsible. “
Reduce” means to reduce food wastes and to reduce the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, etc.
“Reuse” means to reuse existing technologies and materials.
“Recycle” means to recycle wastes into useful materials.
“Rethink” means to rethink our consumption behaviors and old habits, thereby incorporating more green features into our design.
“Responsible” means to be a responsible member of the community and to ensure the health and environment for us as well as for our children.

In 2009, Johor State Government introduced the use of EM Technology to Tanah Sutera Development and they decided use EM Technology in the design of the eco city.

Roadside Trees and other Plantings in the Park

In the eco-city the use of the pesticides is cut to a bare minimum. Instead, EM Technology is applied to promote the healthy growing of plants. Activated EM・1 is spraying widely for green spaces everywhere in the city. These efforts produce plants that are resistant to agricultural disease and pest.

Ponds in the Park

The excessive inflow into the ponds of the substance of concern such as phosphorus or other chemicals is liable to impair the cleaning ability of the eco-system.
This lead to the accumulation of polluted sludge and accelerated growth of corruptive microorganisms along with the production of foul smell. In order to maintain the natural cleaning capacity inherent in eco-system, addition of EM and/or EM mudballs into the polluted site will support the increasing beneficial microorganisms in the environment.

Wastewater Treatment at School

Drainage is first poured into an oxidation pond for natural depuration.
The water that reached the level below the predetermined reference is discharged to the river. Periodical addition of EM and/or EM mudballs is also scheduled to maintain the cleaning capability of the eco-system.

Cleaning of toilets and floors in the shopping mall

Efforts are made to reduce the use of bleaching agents and bactericidal agents to the extent possible at the Sutera Mall.
Application of EM is keeps beneficial microorganisms by suppressing the growth of putrid and pathogenic bacteria.

Kitchen Garbage Management

The kitchen garbage output from standard homes or public facilities is recycled with EM Technology to be used as organic fertilizer in the field or for other plantings.
Recycling of old newspapers and plastic (PET) bottles is being carried out as well.

Environmental Education

Meetings for environmental education are organized periodically at school or in local community to nurture the sound attitude towards nature, life and environment.
Tanah Sutera provides opportunities for learning the basic knowledge and efficient application of EM Technology.

Construction and Architecture

Inclusion of EM materials into concrete, enhances its strength. This fact was confirmed by Tanah Sutera’s own examinations. Processing construction materials with EM Technology is effective to prevent sick house syndrome and allergies for chemical sensitive persons.
Tanah Sutera has built a group of condominiums named “The Seed” totally constructed with EM materials in its concrete.
EM Research Organization provides with the EM materials for construction as well as technical advice and support.
The site of constructions is also totally sprayed with Activated EM・1 to keep the balance of the beneficial microorganisms.

Nozomi no Sato also make their own EM compost mixing the swine manure with the recycled organic waste and Activated EM・1. This compost is used at their small farm and providing for free to the community farmers.
They grow sweet potato vine to feed the pigs besides other vegetables.

Amid the Brazilian midwestern plains, is “Primavera do Leste”, a city located 237 km from Cuiaba, capital of Mato Grosso province. This is a city developed mainly in agriculture and commerce fields and is one of the cities that stand out in the growth of population (approximately 60,000 in just over 22 years after established  as a city). Privileged by its location, as well as strength in commercial and business field have been contibutated to progress of the city.

Due to the fast growing of the city, the company Águas de Primavera began operating a sewage system. At the begining, the effluent treatment system was inefficient because it had a low rate of households coverage; only 1280 households had access to the sewage network. Today, the system has 63,059 meters of collector network and improved the operation system with the construction of new inlet and oulet for the effluent from the anaerobic pond. Finally, the collection network increased to more than 2845 homes.

The effluent treatment plant uses stabilization ponds, which are one of the most efficient when there are space and time available. Further, no skilled labor is needed to operate this system.

The system consists of:

One separation unit waste and effluent;
One sand decantation unit;
One measurement unit;
One anaerobic pond;
One facultative pond;
Three maturation ponds;

As the population increased and the city expanded, upper class residents who moved nearby the treatment plant, started complaining regarding bad odors generated by the plant.

Mr. Marcio Akira, knowing the effects of EM Technology recommended to the technical group  of the plant to introduce EM Tecnnology to eliminate bad odors. Finally, after months of negotiation, EM•1® was applied in the plant.

Because the problem was serious, municipality and environmental agencies were making  pressure to do somenthing to fight the odors. There was an official ceremony to launch the project in the plant with the participation of members of the local government, television and  newspapers.

Treatment Applying EM Technology

The use of EM • 1® to eliminate odors is simple and has quick results. However, to get completely success, it was necessary to follow a series of procedures that are outlined as follows:

With the application of EM•1 is possible to treat the sludge and the material floating in a very low cost. To treat the sludge they used EM Mudballs pumping into the ponds in a dosis of 1 ball/5m² once at the begining and then one application every 6 months to eliminate the sediments.
Therefore, 8000 mudballs were applied into all ponds and to treat the floating material they used EM Bokashi (wheat bran fermented with Activated EM•1). The EM Bokashi was spreaded into the ponds on quaterly basis until the material was completely eliminated.
After 15 days of EM•1 application, the bad odors were completed erradicated in the effluent treatment plant. Complains from residents reduced notably and a survey resulted on 90% of the residents noted positive changes with no bad odors anymore.

The farm SOLE of the company TROPICAL AGRO is located in Quevedo city, Los Rios province approximately 130km far north from the city of Guayaquil.
SOLE farm is an organic certified farm and they introduced EM Technology in a trial to find alternatives to treat Nematode and improve root mass of banana plants as well as farm soil.

PROBLEMS

Sole farm was facing the following problems:

–  Root and soil stimulators that must be eco-friendly
–  Treat of Nematode since they cannot use nematocides
–  Sigatoka disease, the most serious problem in banana market

EM APPLICATION

They introduced EM Technology for a period of 2 months (Jun-Aug 2017) applying EM･1 and AEM (Activated EM･1). They applied AEM in irrigation directly to 350 banana seedling and 1ha for adults plants.

After 2 months they dig the same size of soil in EM treated area and control and separate the roots only.

EFFECTS AND RESULTS

Comparing EM treated area and control area they found the following results:

– Roots increased in approximately 300% compared to control.
– 127g of functional roots in EM area sample soil versus 34g of control (Photo 1).
– EM grown roots were healthy and big as well as EM effect reduced at minimum the impact of nematode (Photo 2).
– Staff is happy since EM is easy to apply in their current protocol.
– Seedlings grow healthier than conventional farming.
– Today (2018), they started with an EM program for 9 applications of AEM per year.

Sikkim is a small and multi-ethnic state located on the Eastern Himalayas.
It has a geographical area of 7,096km2 and is a mountainous region with wide variations in slopes and altitude with  30% the area covered by perpetual snow.
Human population is settled within an area of 2500km2.
Today all the Sikkim state in India is 100% organic state and the first organic state in the world.
They won a prestigious award granted by the Food Ariculture Organization of the United Nations on October 2018.

Introduction of EM Technology

Since 2003, Sikkim state started with their organic vision and the government reduced to subsidize sintetic inputs by 10% year by year.
At the same time, they started to do significant investments in farming education and composting.
Since then, our partner in India, Maple Orgtech (India) Pvt. Ltd, became part of this mission and launched workshops to educate environment related officials on how to use EM in composting and farming.
Later, Maple continued educating farmers and villagers on field farm training under the support of the State State Department of Agriculture.
Working at the ground level with farmers, Maple was commited to teach the concept of EM Technology to promote organic farming.

Because it was very difficult to convert farmers into organic, Maple thought that success would be the result of determination, strategy and willpower.
Therefore, in 2009 farmers took oath in a training session organized by Maple to convert Sikkim into a fully organic state.
Maple is also conducting demonstrations at village meetings to ensure the trust of farmers in using EM products.

Results

The first step towards to conversion of Sikkim state into organic was the adoption of bio-village programme using EM technology.
Since 2003, 396 villages were considered as bio-villages by the Department of Food Security and Agriculture Development in collaboration with Maple Orgtech (India) Ltd.
Approximately 15,000 farmers and 14,000 acres of land in Sikkim were benefited under the programme.
Moreover, important soil enrichment and plant-protection formulations were demonstrated applying EM Compost, EM Bokashi, EM FPE and EM･5.

Today, EM is a familiar term to most of the farming community at Sikkim (2018).

Dreams Come True

On October 15th 2018, India had the “100 percent organic state”, Sikkim, that won the “Oscar for best policies”, conferred by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations for being the world’s best policies promoting agro-ecological and sustainable food systems.
Sikkim won this award beating 51 nominated policies from 25 countries.
